Synaptics Unveils Clear ID In-Display Fingerprint Sensor for 18:9, 20:9 Smartphones

Image
Synaptics this week introduced its first Clear ID FS9500 in-display optical sensor that can be installed under the surface of an OLED screen. The fingerprint reader works faster than facial recognition and can be used in any environments, including dark rooms and sunny beaches, Synaptics says. The first smartphones featuring the technology are due in Q1 2018. Biometric authentication has become a mandated feature of every smartphone in the recent years, but integrating fingerprint sensor has become a challenge as screen-to-body ratio is growing and many front panels have no space for the reader. Some smartphone makers install fingerprint sensor on the back panels of their devices, other, like Apple, introduce facial recognition technologies that require IR and RGB sensors accompanied by appropriate processing resources. Synaptics argues that fingerprint sensors on the back are uncomfortable to use, whereas facial recognition technologies are relatively slow and can be fooled. B

Get ready to see Snapchat Stories everywhere you go. Ever since  Snapchat  launched its Stories feature, we've seen endless clones from the likes of Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc. Stories has become the bread and butter of Snapchat for a lot of users, and according to a new report, we could soon start seeing them outside of the Snapchat app for the first time ever. Per sources that have spoken to  Cheddar , "Stories Everywhere" is a new product Snapchat is developing that'll allow Stories to be shared online and on other social networks. The idea is similar to how Twitter and YouTube allow you to embed tweets/videos on other sites, and it'd enable Snapchat's content to be shared on a much broader scale than ever before. Snapchat is said to be developing Stories Everywhere with Rahul Chopra (former Senior Vice President and Global Head of Video at News Corp), and while Stories Everywh

Samsung Galaxy S8+ review: Infinity and beyond

Image
Introduction What was once an impossible fantasy - a sketch in someone's book, a render of an ambitious concept - is now a reality. These are just some thoughts that come to mind holding the Galaxy S8+, the big and bold next step Samsung took. And yet, such is the progress the smartphone industry has been making that the Galaxy S8+, with its exquisite, elongated shape and borderless display, was the logical way forward rather than a result of a vain experiment. Bigger is better, the old mantra goes, but is it really that simple? How deep does the average pocket go and how far does the average thumb stretch? And, most importantly, how tall is tall enough? Samsung were after more screen in less body and that is far from the only argument in favor of the new 18.5:9 aspect ratio, nor is Samsung alone in its endeavor. The LG G6 is already a reality, with its 18:9 display and Google itself is on board as well, more than encouraging the widescreen experiments. Yet, it will be some time be

Nokia 6 review: Back in black GSMARENA TEAM

Image
Update (August 18): We finally managed to get our hands on the globally available Nokia 6 model. The  review is now up  and here's a quick spoiler - the camera doesn't disappoint. Introduction Nokia, rebooted. The Finnish brand that was once synonymous with mobile phones had gone missing since Microsoft acquired the company's smartphone business in 2014. Lumias were rolling off production lines with Microsoft stamped on them instead of Nokia, and the acquisition terms mandated a two-year moratorium on the use of the brand on smartphones. Fast-forward to the spring of 2016 when Microsoft parted with Nokia completely, selling the feature phone part of the business to a Foxconn subsidiary and the Nokia brand to the Finnish company HMD Global Oy. Established specifically for this purpose, HMD is based in Finland (pretty much across the street from the actual Nokia headquarters) and is made up of long-time 'original Nokia' employees - it's almost as if the brief Micr
